Grok

Grok

Grok is a large language model and AI chat service developed by SpaceXAI (formerly xAI), part of SpaceX. It stands out for answering with reference to posts on X.

Grok is the name of a large language model (LLM) and the AI chat service built on it, developed by SpaceXAI. Its original developer, xAI, was merged into SpaceX and now offers Grok under the SpaceXAI name. People often search for "Groks," but it is the same service.

How it differs from other chat AIs

Its biggest distinction is the integration with X (formerly Twitter): Grok can answer with reference to recent posts and trends on X. That suits following news and public sentiment, but bias and misinformation in posts can flow into the answers too. It also offers a reasoning model mode that thinks step by step before answering, image understanding and generation, and web search.

Three ways to use it

  • Personal use: ask questions from the Grok tab in the X app or website, or in Grok's own app and website
  • Inside your own systems: issue an API key and call a model by name. The API follows the OpenAI-compatible format, so existing SDKs carry over easily
  • Through a cloud provider: call it from major cloud AI services such as Amazon Bedrock or Azure AI Foundry, within your existing cloud contract and access controls

Pricing

Personal use has a limited free tier, with higher limits on paid X plans or Grok's own subscription (SuperGrok). The API is billed by input and output tokens, with prices varying by model. Prices and limits change often, so check the official pricing page.

Cautions for business use

Treat answers based on X posts as leads to be verified against primary sources. Check whether your conversations or posts may be used for training, and for business use choose terms that exclude training (such as the API). Grok also has settings that produce a more casual tone than other models, which may not suit external documents as-is.

The best model depends on the task. We compare several models on the same evaluation set before adopting one; our approach is described in the LLM cost optimization guide. We help with model selection and integration into business systems through our AI & DX services.
